Etsuko Fukaya
Etsuko Fukaya (b. 1981 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan; lives and works in Aichi Prefecture) is an etching artist who specializes in drawing life forms with meticulous precision with very little void or spaces in the image. By depicting them without gaps, she aims at showing a world without boundaries among the living.
Fukaya's depictions of these life forms include not only plants and animals that exist or have existed, but also imaginary creatures, such as humans combined with animals and plants, and creatures that do not exist on earth. Whether they are ancient fossils or represent the future of humankind far into the future, they make the viewer feel the existence of life forms beyond human comprehension. Through works sometimes as small as the palm of one's hand, she creates stories on a grander scale able to transcend temporal and spatial boundaries.
Etsuko Fukaya has exhibited in Japan, Australia, Italy, Denmark, Germany, South Korea and China. She holds a BFA in oil painting and an MFA in printmaking from Tokyo University of the Arts. She also teaches printmaking at Nagoya University of Arts.
